Cummins College of Engineering for Women

Our founder Maharshi Karve sowed the seeds of empowerment for women through education in 1896. The small sapling that he planted over a century today has blossomed into a beautiful tree and today we have schools, colleges and hostels for working women and around 36 institutions under our umbrella. Advance in technology has opened new avenues in career for women.

Our vision of “women empowerment through life enriching mantras of education” lead us to establish country’s first Engineering college exclusively for women. Everything inspiring on paper took constructive shape with financial assistance from Cummins Diesel (India) Foundation and Cummins College of Engineering for Women was started in 1991.

The College offers five undergraduate degree level program and two post graduate programs in engineering.

CCEW ranked 14th amongst top 25 Engineering colleges in Western India by The Week magazine
The Week 22 June 2014
Today's  Article in the on line edition of Education Times.

As we enter the 21st century, a number of promising career choices are available for women pursuing science and engineering, such as IT, electronics, mechatronics etc. In addition to the traditional career choices, an increasing number of women are now entering the scientific work space, enjoying economic freedom and the confidence that comes with it.
Engineering has always been a male-dominated stream. Women engineers are under-represented everywhere, including India. However, recent years have witnessed a significant rise in the enrollment of women in undergraduate engineering studies in India. In India, the number of women engineers was negligible till the early 1980s. It is only in the last 15 years that this trend has changed.
Work-life balance, lack of support and encouragement for female students, and cultural perceptions about the role of women are a few reasons why the engineering field is male-dominated in most parts of the world. Although, there is no radical shift in the traditional ideology, the trend of growing number of women in the field of engineering reflects the new wave of change in gender perception.
Women, across most disciplines, are consistently reported to come across as more confident, sincere, hardworking and respected. This highlights the role of a conducive environment for women pursuing higher education in India, while also depicting her confident attitude.
To promote active participation of women in engineering, science and technology, effective measures have been undertaken by institutions, government and professional organisations. These initiatives include establishing exclusive technical colleges for women imparting quality education and substantial percentage of reserved seats for women by the state government.
To showcase a women’s incredible capacity in the corporate world, major manufacturing and information technology companies are offering special placement opportunities for women during their campus recruitment in engineering schools. Industry leaders believe that women are critical to addressing the skill gap in manufacturing. In the coming years, access to a highly skilled, flexible workforce will be the most important factor in creating value in a company. As consumers and influencers, a woman’s experiences and insights could contribute significantly to the industry’s competitiveness and profitability.
Addressing the work environment concerns and making them more women-friendly, companies are introducing organisational provisions and policies such as flexible hours, flexible locations, provisions for child-care, maternity and paternity leave policies, showing commitment to the hiring, promotion and career development of women while adhering to the principles of merit. Human resource is a vital element of growth in today’s knowledge based economy. A creative and multi-tasking workforce is crucial, not only to spark innovation, but also to fortify sustainable productivity and to improve the quality of life. In order to create a leading work force in every country, the entire population needs to contribute towards the economy. It further implies that the talent and competence of both men and women must be utilised.
